Jan van der Hooft is a talented young artist and performer from Winnipeg. He received his Bachelor of Music degree in vocal performance from the University of Manitoba in June 2011. His extensive musical background includes over ten years of Royal Conservatory piano and theory study as well as six and a half years of formal vocal training at the University of Manitoba. Mr. van der Hooft is currently studying with Lois Watson and Robert MacLaren and performs regularly with Canzona and as a soloist and chorister with the St. Andrews United Church choir. This past fall he appeared as a soloist in performance with the Southern Manitoba Choral Association in their production of Handel’s Messiah as well as the third annual Professor Bach Project. Mr. van der Hooft also made his debut in Manitoba Opera’s production of Salome as “der Sklave”. This year Jan will be competing in the Winnipeg Music Festival and will be travelling to Edmonton in May to participate in a young artists program called NUOVA, where he will sing the role of Mr. Upton in Benjamin Britten’s Albert Herring. Jan is looking forward to pursuing a Masters degree in Performance and aspires to have a career performing and teaching opera and art song in North America and Europe.
