Winnipeg Boys’ Choir

The Winnipeg Boys’ Choir is an auditioned group dedicated to high-quality music making and vocal training in a convivial atmosphere, under the direction of Carolyn Boyes and—this season—Larry Weckwerth, and accompanied by Chris Kayler.  The choir helps young singers find the joy in working hard to achieve excellence as they learn and perform music of all types, in many languages, with a wide range of expression. Founded in 1925, the choir began at once to disprove the odd notion expressed in theFree Press in an anniversary article in 1934, that for “some unexplained reason, climatic or otherwise, boys’ voices could not be properly developed in the west.” In 2014-15, the choir will celebrate its 90th season of song.

The choir now comprises two treble choruses—Brio and Vivo—and a changed-voice chorus, Continuo. In the last few years the choir has performed with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Camerata Nova, the Winnipeg Philharmonic Choir, and Ecco, among other fine professional and amateur ensembles.  The Winnipeg Boys’ Choir looks forward to being a part of Bach’s celestial St. Matthew Passion.
